Petrified dunes, centuries-old rock formations and the best sunset in town. Go late in the afternoon, sit at a rustic beach bar with a caipirinha, look for the Baleia (whale) rock and stay until the sun drops into the sea.

A day-use garden built around crystal-clear, spring-fed rivers. Reservations are mandatory and often sell out weeks ahead. Includes a slow-food Italian lunch served on a private stilt hut over the water.

A speedboat from the beach takes you out to the parrachos, coral reefs that form shallow natural pools far out at sea: chest-deep, crystal clear, full of fish. Check the tide table first.

Galinhos
about 80 km, a full day
A remote, car-free fishing village on a peninsula. Buggy across the dunes or boat through the mangroves, salt flats and wild dunes, and a lunch on the sand: oysters from the lagoon, sashimi, prawns, ceviche, barbecued fish, fruit, cold beer or caipirinha.
