The Wind & Waves: A Rider’s Guide

São Miguel do Gostoso is world-renowned for its consistent "starboard tack" trade winds and warm, waist-deep waters. Whether you are a dedicated kiter, a windsurf purist, or a wingfoil enthusiast, Villa Sa Roqueta puts you in the center of the action.

The Conditions at a Glance

  • The Wind: Reliable side-shore/side-offshore trade winds from the SE.

  • Average Speed: 18–25 knots (peaking in September/October at 30+ knots).

  • Water Temp: A tropical 27°C (81°F) year-round. Leave the wetsuit at home; a rash guard is all you need.

  • The Swell: Generally flat to choppy inside the bay, with a clean reef break about 300m–500m out for wave riding.

1. Praia do Cardeiro (Your Front Yard)

  • Distance: 10-minute walk from the Villa.

  • The Vibe: A beautiful sandy bay with a freshwater lagoon nearby.

  • Best For: All levels. At low tide, the water is butter-flat near the shore—perfect for freestyle and learning. At high tide, it offers fun, manageable chop.

2. Ponta do Santo Cristo

  • Distance: 10-minute walk / 2-minute buggy ride.

  • The Vibe: The most famous point in Gostoso.

  • Best For: Advanced kiters and windsurfers. The point creates a natural "stadium" effect with flat water on the inside and rolling waves on the reef bank just outside.

  • In this area you'll find the most renowned Water Sports Clubs in Gostoso : Kauli Seadi Water Sports Club and Dr. Wind.

3. Lagoa do Sal (The Hidden Gem)

  • Distance: Approx. 30 mins North.

  • The Vibe: A wild, untouched beach with a small freshwater lagoon right on the sand.

  • Conditions: Famous for its "Venturi effect" where the wind often blows 2–4 knots stronger than in Gostoso.

  • Best For: Riders looking for absolute solitude and a boost in wind speed on lighter days.

  • Good for a short downwind session to Ponta do Santo Cristo

4. Perobas Beach (The Reef Session)

  • Distance: Approx. 45 mins South.

  • The Vibe: Famous for its "Parrachos" (coral reefs) that create crystal-clear natural pools.

  • Conditions: At low tide, the reef blocks the Atlantic swell, creating a massive area of butter-flat water over a sandy bottom.

  • Best For: Kiting over the reef or practicing freestyle tricks in waist-deep turquoise water.

5. Maracajaú (The Deep SE Specialist)

  • Distance: Approx. 1 hour South.

  • The Vibe: Often called the "Brazilian Caribbean."

  • Conditions: When the wind turns more South-East (SE), Maracajaú shines. It offers more consistent pressure during the early and late season transitions.

  • Best For: When the wind turns gusty and offshore in Gostoso, this spot shines. Also has a fantastic wave that forms off the southern point of the bay.

* For the best overall experience, we highly recommend any trips to Perobas, Maracajaú or the remote northern spot of Soledade to be organized through Kauli Seadi Water Sports Club. They will provide transportation and the best local knowledge on each spot. And if you're lucky you'll get to sail with the legend himself!
